Kingston University, the public research university, is also among the oldest in the UK, starting off in 1899 with the name Kingston Technical Institute and being recognised in 1957 as the Regional College of Technology. It was in 1992 that Kingston Polytechnic got its current name, Kingston University.

Overall, the university has 18,590 students, of whom 4,290 are international students; it also has four campuses all over Kingston, one in London, and four schools spread out all over the campuses.

The Kingston School of Art has a wide range of facilities that enable its students to achieve their full potential. It has everything from workshops to studios and other dedicated facilities that allow students to experiment with their art and learn new skills while practising. The Kingston School of Art has a variety of different workshops, which include the following:


3D Workshop

This 3D workshop includes various other workshops, such as the Ceramics Workshop for ceramic production. The Ceramics Workshop has all the equipment and machinery needed to produce large-scale or smaller ceramic works.

The Digital Suite Studio has all the equipment for 3D printing, including 3D printers and scanners, laser engravers, and a wide range of cutters, all used to turn 2D art into 3D art. This digital suite, "Hackspace," is where people meet and collaborate in the field of 3D printing to come up with great ideas and collaborate. 

In addition to the 3D studio and the Digital Suite studio, the university also has a metalwork area for those working with metal materials, a model-making area for architecture students working on small models, and a plaster room where students can create their own moulds.

Other 3D workshops include a forge and foundry, a welding bay, and a woodworking mill.


Digital Media Workshop

This digital media workshop has every piece of equipment and software you need for your digital design studies. 

This workshop includes 128 iMacs with various 2D and 3D design software, including Adobe Suite, Vectorworks, Avid Media Composer, and Cinema 4D.

Additionally, this workshop’s equipment has strong GPUs to support SolidWorks, CAD, and Autodesk, as well as two teaching rooms for support. The facility also includes large printers and scanners and is operational six days a week.


Fashion Workshop

This workshop has all the necessary equipment for fashion-related studies, including a fashion design studio, a sewing workshop fitted with industry-grade sewing equipment, and knit workshops containing linkers, gauges, yarn winders, and two digital knit machines.


Studio KT1

Studio KT1 is Kingston School of Art’s creative agency, allowing its students to make an income while studying. Through the KT1 studio, students get real-life experience by working on commercial briefs as well as participating in various events and exhibitions. Students also have the chance to participate in the V&A Awards conducted by the Victoria and Albert Museum, which award the most promising illustrators.


Music Facilities

The music facilities offered by the university include the Coombehurst House, the Coombehurst Lodge, and the Visconti Studio.

These facilities offer five recording studios, a computer station, editing facilities, and band rehearsal rooms. These facilities also offer a wide range of services, including instrument collections, equipment loan systems, and a music library.

These student halls include Clayhill, Middle Mill, and Seething Wells, all close to the Penrhyn Road and Knights Park campuses, and Chancellors Hall and Walkden Hall, both close to the Kingston Hill and Roehampton Vale campuses.

The different buildings provide the following:

  • Chancellors: The room types offered are affordable, standard, and premium ensuite rooms located within shared apartments containing five to eight rooms. These rooms do not have common rooms.

  • ClayHill: The room types offered are standard ensuites, located within four-bedroom apartments, and these rooms have common rooms.

  • Middle Mill: The room types offered are single non-ensuites, which contain shared bathrooms and are located within three- to eight-bedroom flats with no common room.

  • Seething Mills: The room types offered are all ensuite and are the Micro, Budget, Smaller Standard, Standard, and Premium en suite rooms. These rooms come in two- to 14-bedroom flats and have access to a common room.

  • Walkden: The room type offered is the standard en suite room, which comes in an eight- to 10-bedroom flat; these rooms have no common room.
