Why Study at Architectural association school of architecture?
The Architectural Association School of Architecture in London, commonly referred to as the AA, is considered to be the oldest independent school of architecture in the UK and one of the most prestigious and competitive in the world as well. It was established in 1847 as a student-centred collective and it aspired to challenge the established ways in which architecture was taught, theorised, and argued at the time and it urged its members to reconsider the cultural responsibilities and commonplace social of the profession at large which are aspirations that remain at the heart of the school today.
The AA grew from a night school to a self-governed educational institution with a global reputation. It became the first full-time, professional day school for architectural study in the country at the beginning of the 20th century, and it also provided the very first specialised diplomas of its kind in Europe. In 1917, the school moved to Bedford Square where it remains to this day, surrounded by some of the most leading research institutions in the world.
Departments and Divisions
The Architectural Association School of Architecture offers a wide range of courses. The Foundation Course is a full-time, one-year introduction to art and design. The Experimental Programme is a full-time, one year course where students obtain a BA or BA (Hons) leading to exemption from ARB/RIBA Part 1 after three years of full-time study.
The Diploma Programme is a full-time, two-year course where students obtain a MArch degree that leads to exemption from ARB/RIBA Part 2 after two years of full-time study. There are also nine full-time Taught Postgraduate Programmes and a PhD Programme offered. These courses are advanced courses only for students with prior academic and professional experience.
The AA Visiting School is a worldwide network containing short residential courses and workshops that are open to all currently enrolled AA students, architects, recent graduates, and everyone else as well. The AA also offers a wide range of UK-based, part-time courses alongside all its full-time academic programmes.

The facilities offered by the AA include digital prototyping equipment and lab, audio-visual facilities, extensive research archives, workshops, studio spaces, a print centre, AA bookshop, computer room, wood processing yard, robotic fabrication facility, and restaurant and bar.

Architectural Association School of Architecture student accommodation is offered in Hooke Park’s Westminster Lodge dormitory which includes eight rooms each with two single beds, a toilet, a shower, and a washbasin that can accommodate up to 16 students. The rooms are centred around a large communal space with a wood-burning stove. These dorms in London offer food with most of the ingredients coming from the kitchen garden or farmers in the local area, the food is also vegetarian to be inclusive to a wide range of diets.
