Is Aveiro good for international students?

Aveiro is very good for international students. The people are lovely, the city has many nice Portuguese restaurants, and living in the city isn't very costly. It is a small town, so the rent is also quite affordable. The student life itself is fantastic; it’s very organized and active, and you will discover a lot of student traditions that will make you wish you'd chosen to study there for the whole of your life. 

Is it expensive to live in Aveiro?

Life in Aveiro is not very expensive. In total, you will find that 400 euros will be more than enough for you throughout the month. On average, you pay 150 - 250 euros for a room with all expenses. There are cheap places to eat everywhere, and they serve the best food. You would spend about 10 euros a day on food if you don't prefer to cook at home. When it comes to getting around, you can spend absolutely no money. You can go basically everywhere on foot because everything is quite close; this includes the university, the city centre, the hospital, and the police office.

Aveiro’s big attraction is the Mosteiro de Jesus, a monastery with a royal connection and replete with religious art in its museum. This prized monument was built between the 15th and 17th centuries. Its fame comes from one of its residents, Joanna Princess of Portugal, and daughter of Afonso V. Because she was in the royal line, she was never able to take her solemn vows and instead, she lived out a modest life at the convent and bequeathed her estates to it when she died in 1490. She was beatified in the 17th century and her stunning tomb in the lower chancel blends marble and ceramics. Also, the nave and apse of the church are very worth seeing, with their amazing floor tiles and every surface covered with gilded wood carving.

The Museu de Aveiro was originally a number of monastery buildings that have been turned into a museum in 2011. The reason was to show off their architectural majesty and to make an exhibition on the newer upper floors of the awesome array of religious art that has been collected from the many monasteries that used to surround Aveiro. There, you will find primitive and Renaissance painting, Coimbra school sculpture, carved stonework, azulejos (glazed tiles), jewellery, furniture, and historic vestments. Below, you will see the refectory, which is a delight to look at due to its tiled walls. There is also the cloister, built in the 15th and 16th centuries, it has geometric tiles and two tiers of galleries around a central fountain.

The city’s canals, fed by Aveiro’s lagoon, are what give Aveiro its character and surely deserve a couple of hours of your time. They have several branches to stroll by through both historic and newer city quarters. Along the quays in the Rossio area, you can see some wonderful Art Nouveau architecture. The Jardim do Rossio is a canal-front park with lawns and palm trees; it can be a very pretty spot to bring a book to read. The pastel-coloured houses are the icing on the cake; you’ll also find that there’s no lack of tuk-tuks to carry you off on a quick tour.

Local buses in Aveiro are operated by aveirobus which is a part of the larger Transdev company. Many local buses in Aveiro stop near the Municipal Bus Station which is located close to Aveiro Station. Besides local buses, other more long-distance buses (rede interurbana) run to outlying suburbs such as the beaches at Barra and Costa Nova.

Bicicleta de Utilização Gratuita de Aveiro is a bicycle service that you can use for free. You can rent a bicycle in specific spots in the city to get around, you just need to present your Identification Card.
